The winner is...

Russell! I can't lie, I am a bit disappointed. I really loved Jakob. However, Russell did an amazing job and won everyone's heart early on in the competition. He also continued to work hard and grow. Great job Russell! You should be really proud.

Well, I guess that is it until next season! I hope they go back to their normal summer schedule. Something about the fall season was weird and didn't have the same magic that the summer seasons had.

And third place goes to...

Kathryn. I would have hoped that Kathryn was one of the top two, but I can deal that she finishes third. She had a spectacular season filled with some of the most memorable dances from the season. Who knows... maybe we will see her as a choreographer's assistant in the future.

Top 20 perform a Wade & Amanda Robson piece!

This was such an awesome piece it is great to see it again it just sucks that they have to show the video due to Russell's injury. I wonder if the show had all of these videos on hand just in case or if they scrambled to get them after Russell hurt himself.

Amazing choreography! Wade and Amanda are crazy talented.

Russell and Kathryn perform a Hip Hop piece by Tabitha and Napoleon

Another video due to Russell's injury.

I think this performance gave Kathryn the chance to show her versatility. I can only hope that it helped her gain some additional votes!

Ariana, Channing, Jakob and Nathan perform a Contemporary piece by Tyce

Nathan's turns in second, into a quad front attitude turn with a controlled suspension at the end was awesome.

Another great performance chosen from the first showcase episode. Beautiful.

And fourth place goes to...

Ellenore. I am not surprised by this placement. Jakob, Kathryn and Russell have clearly captivated the audience and judges to a greater extent than the other dancers in the top 6. Ellenore was always very good, but she somehow always played second fiddle to one of the top 3. She should be proud of her experience on the show.

Noelle and Russell perform an Afro Jazz piece by Shawn

I guess Russell's injury is pretty significant if they decided to show the video of this performance instead of having them re-perform it. Poor Noelle lost a chance to perform again though...

Ellenore and Legacy repreform a Contemporary piece by Travis

I particularly enjoyed this piece because it showcased a variation in Travis' Contemporary choreography. It was incredibly original in its rhythmic complexities both in music and movement. Really awesome performance.

The married couple is out

Ryan and Ashleigh finish in 6th and 5th place. I expected as much. Although they both did well throughout the competition, I don't think that they shone as much as other dancers.

Mollee and Nathan bring Bollywood back

I could be wrong, but I believe that they originally performed this during the first week of the competition. I would love to watch the video of the first week and the video of this performance back to back to compare. The judges gave Mollee and Nathan a lot of feedback over the weeks that their were growing... I would love to compare to see if I could find definite proof of growth after all of the judges' comments.

Jakob and Kathryn perfom a Contemporary piece by Desmond and Dwight

I know that they just performed this last night, but I was super excited to see it again! Amazing! Chills!

The Groovaloos

One of the things that I love the most about this show is how they take the opportunity to showcase established dance groups. By providing this arena for dance groups like the Groovaloos to perform it gives adult dancers a reason to continue developing their craft.

Ashleigh and Ryan perform their own choreography

I think it's cool that Mary wanted the two of them perform a ballroom piece together.

It raises an interesting idea for me though. Wouldn't it be cool if their was a self choreography week where the couple had to choreograph their own duet in their preferred style or in a style of their choice? I would love to see some them have a chance to demonstrate their creativity and ability to work in a team in a duet.

Bianca, Phillip and Peter bring tap back

Crazy that two favorite performances have come from the first performance week so far.

I am glad that they brought this tap piece back. Bianca, Phillip and Peter deserve to showcase their specialized skills. Awesome choreography. I love the use of modern syncopated rhythms in the classic tap style. Nice juxtaposition.

Ellenore and Jakob reperform an awesome Jazz piece by Sonya

Jakob is my hero. He is so talented!!!!

Nice pick by Adam Shankman. This was a choreographic masterpiece by Sonya. I really enjoyed seeing it performed again.

Beggin

I love the way they channel the spirit of Frankie Vallee in this awesome hip hop remix.

The artist who remixed this song, Madcon is from Norway and has several awesome cuts. If you haven't checked him out you definitely should. I really like "Liar" and "Turn Me Loose."

FINALE!!!!!

Cool opening number by Kelly Abby.

What a great way to open the show. I love the way that they showcased the top 6 performers!

So who will win...

Ok... My top two are Kathryn and Jakob, no mystery there. However, I think that Russell has the biggest following and is the likely front runner. I will not be upset if he wins... he has worked hard and has grown tons.

I can't wait to see!

Russell and Kathryn perform a Hip Hop piece by Tabitha and Napoleon

Maybe I am drawing a blank, but I can't remember Kathryn doing hip hop during this season...

I was shocked to see how well she did. The two of them looked awesome together. Kathryn matched Russell's energy and execution without an issue.

Awesome choreography by Tabitha and Napoleon. Really hot! Loved it!

Ryan and Ashleigh perform a Contemporary piece by Travis

So the married couple finally get to dance together. I am glad that they did not get to dance ballroom. It is good to see them dance together outside of their comfort zone.

The choreography was captivating. Travis is so amazingly talented!!!!!! I want to understand his thoughts and feel his inspiration. It has got to be so cool to be that creative and artistic.

It was a beautiful performance with so much natural emotion and passion. It was simple and elegant, yet raw and ruthless at the same time. Great job!

Jakob and Kathryn perfom a Contemporary piece by Desmond R

I have been waiting to see the two of them dance together all season and to see them dance contemporary makes it that much better!!!!!

Yummy. Beautiful. Breathtaking.

Watching the two of them was like watching Nick and Melanie from season 1. They are both so technically and artistically phenomenal. I loved how the choreography showed off all of their assets without compromising the artistic intention of the piece. There were no leaps or turns just for the sake of having leaps and turns. The choreography and the performance was filled with dynamic variations of artistic emotion. Awesome.

They ROCK!!!!!

Russell and Ellenore perform a Paso Doble by Jason G

Great opening silhouette. I loved the dramatic opening as well as Ellenore's amazing leg lines. The fire in the background was a little cheesy though... come on. It was like a tacky plastic flamingo on a front lawn. Don't ruin a beautiful piece with tacky theatrical elements :-(

The two of them brought such intensity and power to their performance it was captivating. I really enjoyed the two of them as a couple. They both have such great performance quality and energy.

Ashleigh and Jakob perform a Foxtrot by Jean Marc

Interesting to see the two of them dance together again after a couple weeks apart. Their experience dancing together definitely came through in their smooth execution of partnering work as well as their chemistry.

After seeing Ashleigh perform twice, I think she is a little off tonight. Almost low energy or something. Maybe she is still healing after her injury. She looked good, just not as good as she has in previous weeks in my opinion.

Jakob looked great as usual. I don't care what Nigel says, I love that the choreographers keep showing off his amazing leaps!

Ellenore and Ryan perform a Jazz piece by Gary S

Cool concept and choreography. I really enjoyed how the choreography captured the mechanical nature of the music. I disagree with Nigel's analysis of it being void of emotion. I think their was a neat subtly to choreography that brought in an almost subliminal emotional message. I think their connection to each other and their physical interaction helped illustrate the emotional message. It was not as overt as usual, but there was something there.
I say good job!

Ashleigh and Russell perform a Lyrical peice by Sonya

I love the simplicity of the costumes and how they contrast against the bright purple "starlight sky" background. Really beautiful. The touch of wind brought a nice intimacy to the piece.

Nice to see Ashleigh well again physically. It says a lot that her fan base kept her in the competition even without her dancing last week. She is going to get a ton of votes tonight.

Russell did look great. His physical lines have grown with maturity as the weeks have gone on. He has been challenged throughout the season and he has risen to each and every one.

Beautiful choreography by Sonya. It is nice to see a different, softer side of Sonya's creative inspiration.

Ellenore and Jakob perform a Broadway piece by Tyce

Tyce did a great job capturing the sassy 60's nature of Fosse. Loved the choreography.

The two of them are a super powerful couple technically, artistically, and personally. So much energy! Awesome performance! I like them both... however Jakob and Kathryn are my top two!

Ryan and Kathryn perform a Samba by Jason G

Nice opening 180 degree extension by Kathryn. I am surprised to see the two of them dancing together again after partnering last week. Super strong ballroom performance with great entertainment factor. Jason's Cha Cha last week was amazing on the two of them so I am not sure if this one compares, but it was really great.

I'm glad that Kathryn is getting more attention for her performances. She just keeps getting better each week.

On another note... hasn't this song been used on SYTYCD before or am I crazy???

Performance Finale Show - Top 6 Dancers!

OK, so after a week off to celebrate my anniversary I am pumped and ready for tonight's finale performance show!!!!

Bring it on! I some want strong dancing, creative choreography and artistic performances!

December 8th Performance Show

I will be blogging about the December 8th performance show later this week. Sorry! Celebrating my 2nd Wedding Anniversary tonight instead :-)

Wednesday, December 2, 2009

Who is going home this week?

Noelle is going home. I am not happy to see Noelle go... I wish it was Mollee, but I am happy that Kathryn is still with us. I don't think Noelle showed enough personality throughout the competition to get a strong following developed. I think she was dancing in Russell's shadow during the first 5 weeks which didn't help.

Nathan is going home as well. I am sad for him because he had one of his strongest nights in the competition last night, however I think that all of the negative attention from the judges and immature behavior did not help him win the hearts of the audience.

On another note, how the heck did Ryan stay safe after that horrible Chippendale stripper solo? Surprising!

Snoop

Isn't Snoop Dogg like 55 or something now?

Guest Artists Perform - Legion of Extraordinary Dancers

That was amazing. I love the Vitamin String Quartet and their renditions of popular music in a classical style. I also love Coldplay so this was a great combination for me music wise.

The choreography was exotically street and intoxicatingly contemporary. The dancers' movement was beyond synchronized. They were breathing as one. The tricks were outstanding, but so was the artistry. I loved the subtle story line. It was beautiful.

Gentlemen...

Ryan - One of the bottom two, as predicted, he just didn't do enough last night to make a lasting impression. Plus, I think a lot of people find him awkward.

Russell - Safe, shocker. He is definitely a favorite.

Jakob - Safe, thank goodness... yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

Nathan - One of the bottom two. I thought he had a bigger following so I am surprised that he didn't have enough votes to keep him safe.

Legacy - Safe, I am a bit surprised since he did not have a great night last night.

Ladies first...

Ellenore - Safe (She had a great night last night in both of her dances with Jakob, especially her Sonya Jazz piece)

Mollee - Safe (Unfortunately)

Noelle - One of the bottom two, as predicted.

Kathryn - One of the bottom two... I just threw up in my mouth. I am so disturbed by this!

Ashleigh - Safe (eh)

December 2 Elimination Show

For the first time tonight, the audience has full control over who stays and who goes.

Fun opening number by Tyce. I am super proud because my sport loving husband said that he thought it was Tyce's work about 30 seconds into the piece! He has learned so much!

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Till tomorrow!

Hmmm... tough...

I think Noelle and Mollee are in jeopardy female wise and I think Legacy and Ryan are in jeopardy guy wise.

If I had to predict today, I think that Jakob, Ellenore, Kathryn and Russell will be our top 4 dancers. I guess we will have to wait and see!

Jakob's Solo

Leave the best for last!!!!!!

Please notice how Jakob was able to us extremely difficult technical elements to artistically emphasize and illustrate the lyrical nuances and dynamics of the music. There was an artistic and inspired intention behind each one of his movements. It was not about showing what he could do, it was about fully expressing the emotion and feeling of the music. That is what dance is all about.

Excellent solo... I want to be Jakob when I grow up! He has already won in my book!

Russell and Mollee perform a Jive

Russell is so damn cute. I love his smile and energy. His posture needs some work though, during transitions especially. Cute number, but nothing to write home about.

Ashleigh's Solo

Was Ashleigh's costume ballroom's form of hair-ography? I mean, those sequins were going all over the place. Not much content though.

What the heck was up with Ashleigh's mom's hair... did she have "bump-it" in?

Ellenore and Jakob perform a Jazz piece by Sonya

What a cool interpretation of the Tango rhythms. This was a story of two dancers and their incredible extensions. What an awesome couple. What an awesome performance. What awesome choreography!

I don't think any other two dancers would have been able to perform that choreography at that level. Their precision of execution of each body line, each stylistic nuance, each breath was incredible. I agree with Nigel, the two of them are a dream team. Thank goodness that Ellenore finally got paired with someone who could compliment her technically and artistically.

I just love how much we are able (as an audience) to embrace Sonya's crazy and nontraditional choreography! She doesn't confirm and I am so excited that we embrace her lack of conformity!

Legacy's Solo

I really enjoyed the non-b-boy music choice. He did a great job staying true to his style and the quality of the music.

Kathryn and Nathan perform a Rhumba by Tony and Melanie

I would pay a million dollars for Kathryn's luscious side extension that she did in the beginning of the piece. Great choreography to an awesome song. Again, I loved the costuming, lighting and styling of the performers. The choreography combined with the other elements created great depth on the non-dance side.

I enjoyed the performance quality of their dance. I couldn't adore Kathryn more. She is always dancing larger than her physical self. The energy of her body lines extends beyond her finger tips and toes. I wish I could bottle that quality or figure out how to teach that... but I believe that is something that you are born with. That quality is what sets great dancers and phenomenal/artistic dancers apart.

Ashleigh and Legacy perform a Hip Hop piece by Dave Scott

Was Dave Scott inspired by the Twilight New Moon premiere?

I found their vampire styling to be distracting, which prevented me from getting into the piece. I agree with the judges, it just didn't work for me.

Ellenore's Solo

I love how Ellenore is able to showcase her quirky personality with such mature movement in her solos. Really cool performance.

Ryan and Noelle perform a Smooth Waltz by JT and Thomas

What a beautiful piece. The mystical quality of Cirque de Soliel was totally captured in the choreography, costuming and lighting. I was captivated.

I love Adam Shankman's comment about "breathing" with them. What a great way to describe the entrancing quality of the performance.

Nathan's Solo

Not much to it, but he looked good. Excellent turns.

Mollee and Russell perform a Lyrical Jazz piece by Mandy Moore

Oh, when you hear the 80s music you can bet that Mandy Moore is the choreographer!

I loved the choreography, but I found the performance to be very chopping and superficial. I see the merits of the physical execution that they were capable of, but I did not feel a connection between the two of them. I think that they lost the artistry of the piece because of the intense athleticism of the choreography. All three judges loved it, so maybe I am crazy.

I do commend Russell for melding into the contemporary style, but I would expect that of a U of Arts student. Mollee was better than she has been, but I am still not bowled over.

Kathryn's Solo

Gosh. I am totally astounded by how much Kathryn has grown during this competition. Her movement is filled with such passion, artistry, technique, strength and sophistication. Well done!

Ryan's Solo

Oh... poor Ryan... how awkward. His super cheesy performance reminded me of the scene in "The Proposal" when Oscar (from The Office) was a stripper... it was a comedy... not good.

Ellenore and Jakob perform a Quickstep by Tony and Melanie

Nice soft shoe mixed in the middle. I think they did well, luckily, Mary agrees from a technical standpoint as well. Nice! Great partnership!

Noelle's Solo

A little throw back to Charlotte Martin's Every Time it Rains... brings me back to the days of teaching progressions across the floor in my advanced jazz classes back in 2004. Good times...

Her solo was ok. Nothing amazing. It also didn't help her that some of her typical tricks were highlighted in her bio video before she repeated them in her solo... never a good thing! Noelle... you are looking one dimensional... find some new tricks! Or... better yet... stop doing tricks and start performing solos from your heart. True passion will win over the audience more than any amount of tricks.

Kathryn and Nathan performs a Broadway piece by Spencer

I am in LOVE with that piece!!!!! I have always loved that song in the movie White Christmas. Both of them performed the style perfectly. I swear that Nathan is like 5 years older than he was last year. I thought they both were fantastic! The choreography was AWESOME!!!! I loved how authentic it was to the film while still being completely original and creative.

Props to the costume designer too. I loved the way they were able to capture the style and fashion of the genre without using volume in Kathryn's skirt. The flow and feel of her dress was on point without compromising the ability to fully see her body lines.

Russell's Solo

Fun tricks, nice intensity, cool rhythms... he is such a little charmer.

Mollee's solo

This was definitely one of Mollee's better solos. I did not find her childish or annoying... that is some serious progress in my book. Her jumps were strong, her musicality was dynamic and her turns were consistent.

I just wish that all of the dancers' solos were choreographed by the professional choreographers. They would be so much better!

PS - leggings styled to look like jeans should be illegal... what the heck was that?

Ashleigh and Legacy perform a Contemporary piece by Gary Stewart

Ok, this was interesting. I liked the choreography, but I did not love it. It did not have the performance quality that I prefer, however I can completely appreciate the originality and intention. Perhaps the lack of performance quality is more of a reflection of the dancers though. I think the bad-ass nature of the piece really worked for Legacy, but came off as forced for Ashleigh. In my opinion, this piece exposed their lack of classical training. Their jumps and body lines lacked the elevation that I believe a dancer of this level should be able to execute. Eh.

Ryan and Noelle perform a Hip Hop piece by Tabitha and Napoleon

First, Ryan totally looks like Harry Connick Jr. in this piece!

I really enjoyed the music choice and the concept for this piece. Since the show did not include a "pre-dance" moment, we were not given any preliminary information about the dance before watching the full performance. I liked this better I think, because I was able to fully enjoy the concept and storyline without finding it predictable.

Noelle looked great. This subtle hip hop piece worked really well for both of them. Nice work.

Top 10 Dancers Perform

Sorry for missing the results show last week. Preparing for the Thanksgiving holiday prevented me from being able to blog. I am happy that Karen was sent home last week, but I was sad to see Victor go.

Tonight should be interesting. New couple pairings should show us who has real talent and who has been relying on their partner to carry the performance. I can't wait!

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

So who is in jeopardy...

Well, I hope Mollee and Nathan are in the bottom, but their performances this week might be good enough to keep them safe. They were stronger than usual.

I think Karen and Victor are bound to be in the bottom. I don't think that either of them have a strong following and let's face it, their second piece left a lot to be desired.

I am torn and scared about the third couple. I think Noelle and Russell might be in the bottom despite their fabulous performance to Tyce's contemporary choreography.

However, Ellenore and could also grab one of the bottom spots. Both of their dances were good, but I don't think they were as memorable as some of the other pieces tonight.

Regardless, Ashleigh, Jakob, Legacy and Kathryn should be safe... I will be really upset if we see any of them in the bottom.

I guess we will see tomorrow!

Ashleigh and Jakob perform a Cha Cha by Jean Marc

Oh ballroom hands, how I hate thee. Your broken wrists and stressed fingers drive me nuts.

I really like Ashleigh and you know that Jakob is my favorite, but this piece was just OK for me. Maybe it was the repetitive nature of the music, but I was not thrilled by it. I know, the judges loved it. They performed really well... I just wasn't bowled over. Sorry.

Russell and Noelle perform a Contemporary piece by Tyce

Ok. There were tons of stunning technical moments, but they all faded into the intention of the movement which was beautiful. I don't want to see the high legs or the big jumps or the 50 turns. I want to feel the those moments because of the emotion of the piece, the intention of the choreography. I shouldn't lose focus of the artistry because of the tricks and technical elements. In this piece, I didn't. Great choreography and concept Tyce!

Russell and Noelle did a fantastic job with the piece. This was a great moment for both of them.

Mollee and Nathan perform a Can Can by Tyce

Mollee + Nathan + Can Can = CHEESE

However, surprisingly, this routine was less cheesy from than other pieces that they have performed. This performance actually annoyed me less than their performances usual do.

There was a whole lot of pink on that stage though. Wow. Pink pants... really? really...

Nathan's turns in second were beautiful and his control to sustain the extension after his final rotation was phenomenal!

Karen and Victor perform a Hip Hop by Laurie Ann

Eh. I am not a big fan of their fake "hard" faces. Their unison movement lacked synchronicity at times and their performance appeared forced. I think their only saving grace was the lyrical quality of the sustained movement. Eh.

Legacy and Kathryn perform a Viennese Waltz by Jean Marc

I loved their transition from the baby doll hold to the floor. Super dramatic.

How amazing to see Legacy get emotional about the message of hope. How powerful.

So, according to Mary their technique needs more work which I could see (kinda), but their performance was really beautiful in sentiment. I really enjoyed how genuine and sophisticated their facial expressions and emotions were. You could see a real connection between the two of them.

Ellenore and Ryan perform a Broadway piece by Spencer

First, Chicago is one of my favorite Broadway musicals so I am a bit biased. It was interesting to watch choreography to this show that was not of the Fosse style. Cool interpretation and concept. I enjoyed it... however, I am still a purist at heart.

They both performed well. I actually think this character, costume and styling gave a nice roughness to Ryan as a dancer. Nice challenge for him that he met well.

Ellenore is (in the words of Alan Shankman) a ROCKSTAR!

OMG

If I see that horrible "I Can't Believe it's Not Butter" commercial with Megan Mullally one more time I think I am going to scream!

Ashleigh and Jakob perform a Jazz piece by Sonya

dang... Jakob's ponche was freakin' amazing.

I love how Sonya is able to include such demanding and athletic movement while keeping the feeling of the piece so soft and subtle. Some of those lifts and jumps... I can not even imagine trying to do one of them. The two of them made it look easy, but those were super hard.

I loved the music choice and loved the choreography. It was completed unexpected. That piece was beautiful. It was captivating. Their performance was flawless. That was a super memorable piece. That might be THE memorable piece of the season so far.

Russell and Noelle perform a Samba by Tony and Melanie

Boring... boring... boring...

Their performance lacked any depth. It was cheesy and immature to me. I hope they get a chance to redeem themselves in their next piece.

Mollee and Nathan perform a Hip Hop piece

Nice concept, but it didn't really work for me. I agree with Nigel, their performance was very tween to me. I am very interested to see them with different partners... that is if they make it to next week. So far, they are the weakest couple in my opinion.

Karen and Victor perform a Tango by Tony and Melanie

Really great music choice and choreography. I liked the contrasts in the dynamics of both. I loved the tension that was created in all of the transition moments.

No big surprise that Karen looked great performing this style or being sexy. Right up her alley. Victor did a great job. His attitude totally matched the mood of the piece.

It is nice to hear from Mary that this choreography was more difficult than most ballroom pieces because they were able to execute it perfectly.

PS - I love Mary's top... and I don't usually agree with her fashion choices.

Legacy and Kathryn perform a Jazz piece by Sonya

Awesome choreography. Really unique and rhythmic while maintaining a seductive vibe.

I think both Legacy and Kathryn looked great doing this piece. I love their costuming. I think for the first time this season, Kathryn looks a little edgy instead of sweet. Her technique and body lines are delicious. I am liking her more and more each week.

Legacy did great, but it was hard to take my eyes off Kathryn. Great dance for both of them!

Ryan and Ellenore perform a Lindy Hop piece

Not a big fan of the song, but I will try to not let that influence my opinion of the dancing which I thought was really strong. This style really suited Ellenore's fun personality which cam shining through. It also gave Ryan the opportunity to use his strength to throw Ellenore around bit.

Nice first routine. Hopefully they can keep it up.

I like the Lindy Hop. They don't do it much on SYTYCD... I wish they would do more.

Top 12 Performance Show

Everyone dances twice tonight and with their original partner for the last time this season! Should be interesting...

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Channing and Kevin are going home...

It is hard to lose Channing. She is an outstanding dancer. I would kill for her technique. I think this is the result of an introverted personality combined with poor circumstances on the show. I think if Victor and Channing were paired together from the beginning we would have seen greater growth from Channing.

I think Kevin has had a really great run. I am a little bothered by Nigel's comments about Kevin though. Week after week, Nigel and the judges applauded Kevin for his ability to perform all of the dance styles at such a high level as a hip hop dancer. However, tonight Nigel defends sending him home with the idea that Kevin always looked uncomfortable in his duets. Ummm... mixed messages much?

I think we will see Kevin in a commercial or movie. He has too much talent and personality to not spring to something great!

Predictions

Ok - my guess is that Karen and Kevin will be going home this week. However, I could see the judges sending any of them home. I don't think any of these six dancers are favorites of the judges.

Solos...

Mollee, were we just transported to a competition? Mollee is such a strong dancer, she just a strong 16 year old competition dancer... not an adult dancer. She needs more time to mature artistically.

Nathan, hmmmm, what amazing core strength and control. Sure, lets all just do like 8+ rotations, suspend our balance and control our ending while still in posse. Awesome.

Solos...

Oh Karen... you just proved to the judges that you are in fact just a one trick pony. You need to rely on your technique, not your sexiness.

Kevin, that was not your best work. There was not enough put into that solo. Kevin better hope that the judges remember how much they love him when they go to make their elimination tonight.

Channing, that was was pretty nice. There was a lot of substance behind that lyrical solo. I think there was a little too much extension work for such a short period of time but let's face it... I'm just jealous of those awesome long leg lines!

Victor, I wish we have seen more of that from you in your duets. Those turns and technique are to die for.

Results for the last 2 couples

Mollee and Nathan are in the bottom. I know that they had a decent performance last night, but I am not upset that they are in the bottom at all. I think the judges have a total double standard where these two are concerned.

Kathryn and Legacy are safe. Their Paso Doble was super dynamic and passionately performed so they totally deserve to be safe.

PS - Did Cat steal Susan Boyle's wardrobe tonight? What they heck is that?

Results for the next 3 couples...

Ellenore and Ryan are safe thanks to their breath taking piece choreographed by Travis Wall.

Noelle and Russell are safe. I think this is a result of their fan following. They had a great performance, but I think people are voting for Russell's adorableness more than their standout performance.

Channing and Victor are in the bottom. I am surprised because I think they both had a good night last night. Unfortunately, their show history might be negatively effecting them. Channing and Victor have both had previous partners which I think has prevented them from developing a strong following of fans. They both also have subtle personalities which also might be hurting them a bit.

Results for the first 2 couples...

Ashleigh and Jakob are safe as expected. Their performance was strong and Jakob is my favorite so they would have to be safe.

Karen and Kevin are in the bottom. No surprise there. Their Broadway routine left a lot to be desired.

November 18 - Results Show!

14 will be narrowed down to 12 tonight.

Amazing opening number by Wade and Amanda Robson. Their creativity is absolutely endless. I adore how they are able to bring a unique concept to life with such artistry. I almost feel like their choreographic style should become a dance style of its own.

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Till tomorrow!

I agree with the judges, Karen and Kevin are going to need their fans to stay up late voting tonight to keep them out of the bottom but sometimes comments like that is exactly the help that the couple needs... We shall see!

Mollee and Nathan perform a Pop Jazz piece by Laurie Ann Gibson

I have mixed feelings about this couple. They both have so much potential, but it is not coming together completely. I kinda think Nathan is being held back by Mollee. Although this was a good style for both of them, I don't think that Mollee is mature enough for this competition. Clearly they can both perform at this level from a physical stand point, but holistically, they are just not there. I think Nathan has the ability to hold his own and grow to the same level as the other contestants, but I don't think he can do it with Mollee as his partner.

I think Alan's comment speaks volumes about them as a couple. If he needs to give them the advice to look at the couples that the judges are praising and see what they can learn, doesn't that say something? They are talking to them and treating them like they are children. The judges aren't acting that way with any other couples...

Ryan and Ellenore perform a Contemporary piece by Travis Wall

Really incredible piece. I loved the song choice and the athleticism of the choreography. Travis really put them through the ringer physically and emotionally and they held up to the challenge. They both showed every ounce of their training in practically every movement. Travis continuously asked them to move through strenuous moments with fluidity and grace. I loved Travis' creativity in choreography. You could feel the underlying driving beat of the music pulsate through their emotional exploration of movement and storyline. Incredible.

I was expecting great choreography from Travis, but I wasn't expecting much from Ryan and Ellenore and they both surprised me. They will definitely be safe. Ryan surprised me in his ability to perform this style at such a high level of integrity. Ellenore is a powerhouse! Where did that come from? As a couple and as individuals, they needed this dance tonight. This performance, Travis' unexpected and demanding yet artistic choreography, helped them make a name for themselves. They definitely bounced back after last week's horrible hip hop "experiment."

Kathryn and Legacy peform a Paso Doble by Tony and Meredith

Kathryn really sold this piece for me. She had power, passion and performance quality. I think this gave her the chance to show that she is not as soft and delicate as she first appears.

Legacy did a good job too, but there is something about his placement that bothered me. In an effort to be strong, he came off stiff. It wasn't bad... it was just a little forced in my opinion.

Channing and Victor perform a Jazz piece by Tyce

Really interesting and fun choreography by Tyce. I love the way he interpreted the rhythmic idiosyncrasies of the skat singing and music. I don't know if it was the choreography or the performance, but they appeared to sort of go in and out of bird movements and "regular" movements. I found this a little distracting. Perhaps it was the intention, but it interfered with the development of the story for me.

Both of them clearly illustrated what physically strong and well trained dancers they are. They are well-suited for each other.

Noelle and Russell perform a Fox Trot by

Ok - yes, Russell is very good, but a foute into a double turn does not amaze me considering that he was a dance student a the University of the Arts in Philly! I think Russell has more classical training than we have been led to believe.

They both danced well and their ballroom technique has clearly improved (according to Mary) which is great, but I don't think the dance had enough youth-appeal to keep them safe. If they are safe, it will be the result of a strong following not their performance.

Karen and Kevin do a Broadway piece from Sweet Charity by Spencer

Hmmmm... ok... I liked the choreography. It was very true to the art of musical theater. However, it was a boring performance. I think they both danced well, but there was something missing. I was impressed by Kevin's ability to articulate the choreography without looking like a Hip Hop dancer trying to perform Broadway. His performance wasn't great, but I would like to give him credit for that.

I would be shocked if they were not in the bottom 3 couples this week. I just don't think it was memorable... or good enough... to keep them safe.

Ashleigh and Jakob perform a lyrical Hip Hop piece by Tabitha and Napoleon

That was a really great routine both in choreography and performance. Ashleigh and Jakob did an awesome job keeping the integrity of the choreography while articulating the dynamics of their characters. I agree with Nigel that both of them have grown immensely during this competition.

I think Jakob is probably my favorite dancer at this point. He is amazing. I can't believe how well he is able to perform each and every dance style.

My only complaint about the piece... Ashleigh was clearly trying really hard to do her best and in doing so, I think some of her facial expressions looked contrived, but obviously, I am being really picky to complain about something so minor...

Top 14 Performance Show

With only 7 couples and 2 hours of programming, we are in for an exciting night of lots of filler from the judges and random pre-dance segments. Awesome!

Pauline and Peter head home

I agree with the judges 100% about their criticism of Pauline. Her solo was elementary for an advanced dancer.

Unfortunately, in the past three weeks Peter has not been able to stand out enough in his performances to create a following in the judges or from the audience. Sad to see another taper go though...

Till next week!

My predictions

Ok - for the ladies I think Pauline and Ellenore are both options, but I would have to go with Pauline. I just don't think the judges are going to be impressed by her solo. It lacked any form of artistry.

For the gentlemen I think Peter will be going home. After two tappers went home last week I feel like they might be on a roll clearing the tappers out. If it was me, I would be sending Ryan home, but I think the judges like him too much.

Second three solos...

Peter's solo was awesome. I am glad that he went acapella so that we could really hear his taps clearly. Nice job.

Karen's solo ok for a ballroom solo. It was definitely not as awkward as Ryan's was. She will be safe because the judges totally love her.

Kevin's solo was good. I think the judges love him too so I doubt that he will be going home tonight.

First three solos...

Ellenore's solo was interesting and original. I don't know if it will be enough to keep her safe though.

Ryan's solo was awkward and uneventful. Ballroom solos usually are. I think the judges are really loving him lately so I doubt that he will be going home tonight.

Pauline's solo lacked depth and was more about random tricks and energy... I would be surprised with the judges liked it.

Results for the last 2 couples

Shock... Surprise... Big Upset...

Mollee and Nathan are safe despite their horrible performance. It is amazing what a fan base can do.

Karen and Kevin are one of the bottom three couples. Ouch. They should have been safe.

Results for the next 3 couples...

Jakob and Ashleigh are safe. They had a good night thanks to Mandy's totally awesome 80s jazz choreography. They both performed well and definitely deserve to be safe this week.

Pauline and Peter are in the bottom. I am a little surprised by this result because I thought that their original quick step performance concept and costuming would have made this dance more memorable. I guess they don't have a big fan base?

Noelle and Russell are safe. They had a really original dance that they performed well... their performance stood out and people obviously enjoyed them.

Results for the first 3 couples...

Ryan and Ellenore are one of the bottom three couples - I can't say that I am surprised. Their hip hop performance left a lot to be desired.

Channing and Victor are safe. They had a good night thanks to Stacy's awesome choreography. I think this new couple will have a promising future.

Kathryn and Legacy are also safe. I am a little surprised by this considering their ok Broadway performance. I would guess that Legacy has a pretty strong following that was willing to put in the time to vote last night to keep them out of the bottom.

November 11 - Results Show!

Really cool opening number by Dave Scott. I loved the story and non traditional costuming. I love when the costume and styling does not look like a hip hop piece yet has full integrity with the dance style based on the intention of the concept.

Awesome.

Till tomorrow!

Nathan and Mollee are going to need some serious help... should be interesting to see what happens tomorrow night!

Noelle and Russell perform an Afro Jazz piece by Shawn

Hmmmm... interesting...

I enjoyed it... but I am sort of left speechless. I am not sure really what to say. It was good. Interesting...

Mollee and Nathan perform a Salsa

There was a serious lack of chemistry between them this week. That was horrible. There is something about Mollee that bothers me. She is awkward... maybe it is her immature movement. The performance was chopping, fumbly, awkward, and amateurish. Nothing was synchronized. That was really bad. If they are not one of the bottom couples I will be disappointed.

Ryan and Ellenore perform a Hip Hop piece by Lil C

Boring. I think it was really good that they had such extreme costumes that sort of hid them a bit so that you could watch their movements and separate them from the person. I think it helps being objective. I don't know if it was the moderate tempo or the not-so-comfortable performance, but it was boring to me. They both tried. Ryan was better than I thought he would be, but it just didn't work. I think they are going to be in trouble.

Interesting to hear Nigel and Adam debate hip hop... no really, go on... I want to hear more...

Channing and Victor perform a Contemporary piece by Stacey

For being a new couple, I think the two of them showed a good amount of chemistry. I think having Contemporary probably put them both at ease and allowed them to focus on growing together. I enjoyed the choreography, but like Mary, I was not incredibly moved by it. It was a beautiful piece, but it didn't pull at me. I was also distracted a little by the costuming. The ultra pedestrian quality of Victor's costume contrasted too much with Channing's ice skater-like dress. the contrast does not look like a purposeful or artistic choice. The awkward length of Channing's skirt made her look really short and broke her lines. Their costumes looked like an after thought to me.

Kathryn and Legacy perform a Broadway piece by Andy

Really cute choreography. Adorable performance. As usual, I agree with Adam... I don't know if their performances clearly communicated their character. Their characters lacked depth... it was very shallow and on the surface, but it was still cute. I think they will be in trouble.

Pauline and Peter perform a Quick Step

I think the characters and song selection really helped the two of them make this work. Like Adam, I can't talk about the technical elements, but I agree that the strong performance helped them hide some of their technical issues. However, the majority of the audience is not going to be evaluating their technique... so, I would guess that they too will be safe... unless the rest of the couples all rock it... then they might end up on the bottom.

Asleigh and Jakob perform a Jazz piece by Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore loves herself some 80s music. I am cracking up at bit an Ashleigh's shiny high waisted stretch pants, slouchy socks and high heels... nice faux mullet pony tail.

I enjoyed the choreography and use of the cane. They both did a great job working with each and staying in character. They have a great relationship and chemistry developing. They sold the rhythmic precision and sharp body lines of the choreography. I was not a big fan of Ashleigh's in the beginning, but I am starting to warm-up to her. I think they will both be safe.

Karen and Kevin do the Hustle

Nice shoulder action there Kevin! hahaha!

Well, Karen definitely visibly sold the piece, but I think Kevin did well too. It wasn't as smooth as I would have liked, but there were several really nice moments. I really liked the smaller lift when Karen was in a back attitude against Kevin's hip and he was rotating. Her leg line was beautiful and they both made it look effortless. Nice job, I think they will be safe.

Top 16 Performance Show

Top 16 perform tonight and for the first time this season, the audience will vote for their favorite dancer. Should be interesting...

Bianca and Phillip go home

Two tappers bite the dust. It was great to see tappers make it this far in the competition, but I agree with the judges decision.

It was an ok night on SYTYCD. So far, I am not super impressed or excited about season 6. Let's hope things get better next week!

Solos...

I thought Noelle danced with passion and grace. Beautiful!

Victor demonstrated great power her solo, but it sort of came of as a cheap imitation of Brandon's Carmina Burana solo from last season.

Bianca is a really talented tapper. Great musicality and articulation. I just wish she could transition into other styles better.

Phillip is also a really talented tapper. Hmmmm... maybe Victor will be going home instead.

Noelle, Bianca, Victor and Phillip are in danger

I am not completely by the result, but I think that I would have switched Noelle and Channing maybe... I would guess that Bianca and Phillip will go home...

Ryan and Ellenore perform a Tango by Miram and Leonardo

Smooth transitions. Dramatic moments. Elegant and effortless lifts. Beautiful lines. This was a great performance for both of them. Ryan was an excellent partner. Ellenore was beautiful. They had amazing chemistry that made the piece work. Otherwise the quiet sophistication of the mid tempo piece would have left the audience bored and unengaged.

Pauline and Peter perform and Jazz piece by Wade and Amanda Robson

An earlier draft of van Gogh's Starry Night... interesting Wade... what are you on? How does your mind work?

You can tell that Wade is a true lover of music with his ever diverse music selections. I like how they animated the background. I think it really accented the energy of the piece and complimented the concept.

I really enjoyed it. It wasn't technical... it was rhythmic... it was filled with subtle nuances... it had lyrical moments juxtaposed with precise accents. It took a lot of talent for the two of them to pull this off despite the lack of technical elements. I liked it, but I wouldn't be surprised if audience members were left confused. I appreciate Wade's creative evolution of movement and inspiration!

Kathryn and Legacy perform a Contemporary piece by Stacey Tookey

I loved it! Great choreography by Stacey Tookey. Great, unexpected music choice. Great performances by Kathryn and Legacy. I agree with Adam, Legacy was really transformed during that piece. He showed great maturity of movement. They both articulated lyrical nuances and emotional abandonment with subtle power. Kathryn has beautiful body lines and great strength. I think this is going to be the memorable piece of the evening... I think this will be one that we will remember throughout season 6.

Kevin and Karen perform a Hip Hop piece by Tabitha and Napoleon

I don't know how I feel about a song called "Ice Cream Paint Job." A couple inappropriate moments of choreography Nappy Tabs... woah!

Karen definitely missed some little moments here and there, but overall I think she held her own with Kevin. They worked really well together, sold the concept and kept the energy pumping. Great work to both of them. They are safe this week.

Phillip and Channing dance a Samba by Tony and Melanie

Clumsy, abrupt, awkward... yuck. That was not good for either of them. They really struggled. That lift was horribly awkward. The ending was super clumsy. Ouch. They tried really hard, but couldn't make it happen. At least they aren't in denial about their performance.

Molly and Nathan perform a Bollywood piece by Nakul DevMahajan

I loved the opening and closing silhouette, however the background of the Taj Mahal was a bit much. Artistic lighting would have been better.

I think this was good for both of them, but I think this was really good for Molly. I think that she had to concentrate so much on the style that she was able to abandon all of her immature bad habits and cheesiness. The two of them worked really well together, kept their energy up and appeared to articulate the style of Bollywood well.

Bianca and Victor perform a Broadway piece by Tyce

Bianca definitely got the flavor and style of the choreography and musical, but her technique leaves much to be desired. I just pray that she learns how to roll through her feet and extend through her lines. She was moving through her movement with FLAT FEET! Eek!

I agree with the judges. The performance was too placed and stiff. Neither of them got lost in the character. Victor definitely has technique, but it looked like the trained ballet dancer trying to dance another style. The energy from the music and spirit of the musical overwhelmed the dancers... they just couldn't pull it off. I think they are in jeopardy! Nice choreography though Tyce.

Ashleigh and Jakob perform a Viennese Waltz by Tony and Melanie

First, Jakob's impression of bad dancing was pretty funny!

Ok, onto the dance... I love this song by Etta James! What a beautiful classic. The choreography had a nice balance between classic elegance and intimate moments. I am rarely a fan of the ballroom pieces, but I really enjoyed it. Jakob's turning switch leap was beautiful! I agree with Adam Shankman that it was a bit tricky... however that might have been what caused me to like it. It had more entertainment value than the usual ballroom piece. I can't believe I liked the tricky-ness of it... my dance students know that I HATE random tricks without an intention behind the movement more than anything... I must be losing it!

Russell and Noelle perform a Hip Hop piece by Jamal Sims

Interesting contrast between a preppy sport like tennis and hip hop. I don't know if the concept matched the music for me. I think Russell and Noelle both sold the piece as much as they could, but I don't think this was a great performance for either of them. This is a disappointment considering that this is Russell's comfort zone. I love a good story line and a solid concept, but I was just not feeling this one. It was ok... I think they will be safe though because it sounds like the judges are ok with it overall.

Top 18 Performance and Selection Show

I am excited to see that Noelle is able to dance! I am looking forward to tonight's dances!

Ariana and Brandon go home

I am pleasantly surprised. I think Ariana has more growing to do. Who knows though, if Noelle's knee injury is serious Ariana might be back on the show next week.

It is appropriate for Brandon to go home as well. I think it is great though that Nigel is going to try to bend the rules to allow Brandon to have a full chance next season.

Good first official episode of the season! Can't wait for next week!

Solos

Ariana's solo was ok. I don't think that she fully extends through her upper body. Something about her movement does not come to fruition.

Russell's solo was krump-irific and filled with intense energy.

Pauline's solo was spicy hot and energetic, but I don't think it showed enough of her attributes to save her. I liked it better than Ariana's but I think the judges are going to send her home anyway.

Brandon's lyrical hip hip solo was pleasantly unexpected and distinctively filled with depth of emotion. I guess I understand better now why Brandon was selected to join the top 20.

Ariana, Brandon, Pauline and Russell dance for their life

Ok. I am not surprised by the first three, but Russell? Really? I think he has a huge fan base already and has the ability to win this competition. Well, we shall see who the judges choose but my guess is that Brandon (poor guy just got here) and Pauline will go home. Their waltz was just not strong enough to keep them around.

Mollee and Nathan perform a Disco piece by Doriana

I am guessing that these two dancers of similar styles (contemporary and jazz) got paired because of their height. If Mollee can continue to grow in maturity of style and nuance I think that this could be a really powerful partnership. I am a fan of Nathan's and now that Billy is out of the competition he is probably my favorite from a technical and artistic perspective.

Cool lift, scary lighting (warning to those epileptics out there), choppy transitions... I don't know. Mollee looks like she is 12. Her movement, as well as her face, lacks maturity. Maybe it is her goofy attitude that comes through when she performs. The judges liked it, but it was not as good as I had hoped.

Kathryn and Legacy perform a Hip Hip piece by Dave Scott

I think Legacy was channeling his performance in Stomp the Yard for that one. Choreography was really fun and interesting. I enjoyed the syncopated movements and their contrast with the "me Tarzan, you Jane" prehistoric concept. I think they did well. It was a cool piece.

Pauline and Brandon dance a Smooth Waltz by Jason Gilkison

I will not hide my emotions. I am crying to see Juilliard's Billy replaced by a hip hop dancer. I am sure that Brandon is very talented, but Billy's technique was beyond words.

Considering they only had two days to bond with each other I think they showed a fair amount of chemistry. They both performed admirably considering their preferred styles and the circumstances. It is a good thing that judges are voting tonight instead of the audience because I fear that the sophisticated dance style and music choice might not make the best impression on the edgier and youthful audience of SYTYCD.

Ryan and Ellenore perform Contemporary Jazz piece by Sonya

Woah Ellenore... big words during the pre-dance segment. The dance was good, but I don't know if this dance would go down in SYTYCD history.

Sonya did an awesome job bringing an original concept to life through rhythmic and animalistic movement. They performed really well. Ellenore's leg lines and Ryan's strength were definitely showcased in this dynamic piece. I hate to stay it, but there is something about Ryan that I find an awkward match for dance. Perhaps it is his over developed muscular frame... he just looks bulky to me... sorry Ryan!

Kevin and Karen perform a Cha Cha by Tony and Melanie

I am laughing so hard that Tony and Melanie chose to use the Glee cast's version of Push It for this piece. Too funny!

Very sterile, awkward, clumsy performance. The articulation of movement lacked any kind of smoothness. Kevin tried really hard and Karen definitely held the piece together thanks to her ballroom background, but it was just ok for me. Eh... I think Peter and Ariana have some partners on the sketchy performance train.

Bianca and Victor perform a Contemporary piece by Travis Wall

I am so glad that Travis has become a part of the choreographic family at SYTYCD. His choreography explores movement and music in such unique and emotionally charging ways. His creativity is amazing.

Victor's control and technique is scrumptious! He was awesome! Great way for him to start the season... I hope he can keep that intensity up in other styles. I agree that Bianca needs some more refinement on her classical technique. However, her performance ability and work ethic got her through this dance with respect.

Russell performs a Fox Trot with Melanie instead of Noelle

I wonder if Melanie is wearing the same costume that Noelle was supposed to wear... somehow I doubt that!

I am really enjoying the backgrounds that they are able to project on this new set! They really make a huge impact on the dance. However, despite my love of darkly lit dances I was really frustrated with the lighting for this number. I feel like I missed so many moments on Russell's face because it was so dark.

Russell is crazy good. His arm lines, his leg lines... I can't believe that he is untrained. His bio says that he has danced "professionally" since he was 6. I wonder what that really means since he is untrained.

Ariana and Peter perform a Hip Hop piece by Nappy Tabs

Interesting costume choice... I guess it captures the futuristic sound of this awesome song! I really enjoyed the cool level changes that Tabitha and Napoleon subtly put into the choreography.

I agree with the judges. The performance was ok. It was passable, but nothing memorable. I don't think that they attacked it and put themselves fully into the intention of the choreography. They better hope that other couples really suck or mess up... otherwise they might be in jeopardy of going home week one!

Ashleigh and Jakob perform a Broadway piece by Tyce

Woah... dirty and raunchy... really Jakob... Ashleigh is a married woman.

I love the silhouette of jazz musicians in tangy purple on the background. It really sets the scene. I am not a huge fan of Jakob's costume. The colors in his shirt do not match the intensity of the shade of blue on Ashleigh's dress.

Great choreography by Tyce and wonderful performance. Ashleigh's technique does not come close to Jakob's, but she is a great performer. I think this was a easy transition for her style wise from ballroom. I will be interested to see if she can stay strong next to Jakob in other styles.

Phillip and Channing dance a Jive by Jason Gilkison

I love The Jackson 5's Rockin Robin! For a contemporary dancer and a tapper I think the two of them used their stage presence to connect with the audience and sell this number. Channing was super cute and Phillip used his musical theater experience to his advantage.

I will defer to Mary's critique that their technique was not as strong as it should have been, but I think they performed well.

First Night of Duets!

I am so excited to see if the judges decide to get rid of the same dancers as I would! However, I am super sad to loose Billy to illness. He was soooo awesome! Ouch for Noelle's knee injury. I hope she is ok and can come back to the show next week!

Monday, October 26, 2009

Till tomorrow!

I can't wait to see the first competitive night of dances!

Karen, Ashleigh and Ryan perform a Samba by Jason Gilkison

Can't say I have ever seen a ballroom trio before. It was a little awkward, but I think the choreographer did a great job of working with the unnatural grouping.

It was a cute number. I think the dancers performed the choreography well and did an excellent job of communicating the storyline.

Billy, Kathryn, Noelle and Victor perform a Contemporary piece by Mandy Moore

I can feel Juilliard oozing out of every limb of Billy's body! I love his technique!!!!

What a cool exploration of rhythmic accents! I love choreographing to Coldplay and totally love Mandy Moore for using this super charging piece of music in a non-traditional format. I love the pedestrian inspiration behind the movement and staging.

Mollee, Pauline, Ellenore perform a jazz piece by Sonya

Bringing Sexy Back Sonya? I am not seeing the sexiness of those costumes...

Although I really enjoyed the choreography and the music I was a little disappointed in the dancers. I feel like their energy started to fall shortly into the number and that they lacked a genuine connection to the movement. I wasn't pulled or impressed by their performance :-(

Peter, Bianca and Phillip perfrom a tap piece by Derick K Grant

It is about time that SYTYCD brings tap to the stage! Most of the trained dancers on SYTYCD have studied ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical and contemporary over the years so these should not be the only dancers capable of performing this style. They just may be a lot better than everyone else in it.

I think they should give other dancers who have a background in tap the chance to perform this dance style in order to even out the playing field for the tap divas...

The performance was classically beautiful. I was not expecting such a traditional tap number in styling, music or choreography, but I definitely enjoyed it! They are truly musicians!

Ariana, Channing, Jakob and Nathan perform a Contemporary piece by Tyce

Interesting rendition of Cryin' by KD Lang. I enjoyed how Tyce played off the grittiness of her voice to bring out raw emotion. Beautiful use of lighting! I loved the way the deep blues set the scene and created such a melancholy contrast to the creams in their costumes.

I enjoyed Tyce's choreography and enjoyed watching the four dancers together. I really enjoyed watching Nathan... he is a personal favorite from Vegas.

Russell, Kevin and Legacy perform a piece by Nappy Tabs

Ok, so I thought they were performing solos, but I guess they are doing small group numbers with other dances from the same genre.

Great performance. I love this song! What a great throwback to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Awesome performance with lots of great energy.

If the rest of the show is this good... I am pumped!

Top 20 perform a Wade Robson piece!

What an amazing way to start the season! Sublimely original choreography and concept filled with melodic movement and syncopated rhythms. I absolutely adored the vintage costuming and styling of the number. The purposeful and strategic use of color makes me want to sing!

Amazing work Wade! I love the way he is able to seamlessly move in and out of dance genres while maintaining his artistic integrity and stylistic signature. He is so talented!!!!
New set is hot!

Season 6: Meet the Top 20!

A SYTYCD first! After a stressful final audition in Vegas, the top 20 dancers get a chance perform solos in their preferred dance style before having to face the audience with duets. Should be interesting!

On to the Finale

Well, we have our top 4 dancers and are ready for the Finale! I think America got in right with the Ladies, but I am sad to see Ade go. I can't believe that the Finale will be in the Kodak Theater! That is huge! I can't wait!!!!!!

Evan is in the Finale...

So sad for Ade. Tear. Sniffle, sniffle...

Kayla is in the Finale!

Thank goodness!!!! Phew! Finally we are done with trina Melissa! Kayla deserves to be in the finale. She has been a standout from the beginning.

Sean Paul

Did they go to the club on the corner and find these back up dancers? They are kinda a casual mess.

Evan's Solo

Watching Evan perform makes me wonder if his fan base went crazy last night and voted him into the finale. It's not that I dislike Evan, it's just that I think Ade has more to offer and deserves that place in the finale more.

Kayla's Solo

I think it is best that I no longer watch Kayla's solos. I find that her solo performances cheapen my opinion of her as a dancer. I can't handle how she falls back into dance competition mode. She is so much better than that!

Chelsea and Mark dance Nappy Tab's "Bleeding Love"

I love the unexpected lyrical hip hop interpretation of this pop song. This dance has definitely been one of my favorite pieces from Tabitha and Napoleon.

What was Kat thinking?

Usually I think that Kat chooses really cute, trendy and sometimes cooky dresses, but tonights emerald green 80s sequin throwback is just not working for me. Sorry. The short sleeves I think threw me over the edge. Hey Kat, Jem and the Rockers called and they want their dress back.

Jabbawockeez Perform

I love how this group uses dramatic costuming and masks to create a level of uniformity and synchronicity that appears not human. I can't get enough of the drama!

Ade's Solo

I think that was 8 rotations on that turn. Executed with such beautiful strength and control! I can feel his inner passion for dance through his performance.

Melissa's Solo

I can't watch... she makes me feel sick.

Chelsea and Joshua dance Dimitri's Emmy Nominated Piece

This is probably one of the most entertaining and captivating ballroom pieces that I have ever seen. Dimitri did a great job creating drama through the dynamic of the movement and music. Nice to see Chelsea and Joshua dance again... they both are so cute!

Katie and Twitch perform Mia's "Mercy"

I love how Mia used the natural essence of both of these very different dancers to create such a unique piece. The use of the door brings out so many dramatic moments. What an awesome piece! It was nice to see Twitch and Katie dance again. I always really enjoyed both of them.

Brandon is in the Finale!

I don't think anyone is surprised that Brandon made it through. He was definitely the obvious choice. He had a great night last night, especially with his solo, and deserves to be in the final 4.

Jessica and Will perform Tyce's "Silence"

I feel bad because I don't remember that piece from last season... I also don't really remember Jessica. It was a beautiful performance of Tyce's intimately creative choreography. I like how the costuming brought a primitive quality to the piece.

Jeanine is in the Finale!

As expected, Jeanine is the top girl. Although she did not have the best night last night, Jeanine has been consistent week after week and is definitely a favorite among trained dancers.

Top 6 perform Tyce's piece to Send in the Clowns

Quiet sophistication. The maturity and depth of that routine was captivating. I loved it. Some of Tyce's best work in my opinion. I loved the ironic play on the literal interpretation.

Thursday, July 30 Results Show

The top 4 dancers will be chosen tonight!

Wednesday, July 29, 2009

Who is going home this week?

I think Melissa and Evan are the most likely candidates to go home this week. However, I feel more confident on my Melissa prediction than my Evan prediction. I personally think Ade and Brandon deserve to be in the finale, but Evan's fan base might pull him through over Ade.

I guess we will have to wait and see tomorrow night!

Top 3 Ladies dance Sonya's Jazz Routine

Superhero thing, interesting. I like how the costumers personalized their "uniforms." Cool choreography. Very out of the box.

Notice that all three of them had amazing lines on their arabesques and kicks. They have all spent a ton of time at the ballet barre by the looks of it. I think Jeanine was the only one that really got the full "flavor" of Sonya and her choreography. Kayla was close, but was missing a slight edge in her execution. It was not quite extreme enough in the little details. Melissa blended.

Kayla and Brandon dance Doriana Sanchez's Disco

Drop and give me 20 Brandon... that was awesome!

They both have such great energy and this really capitalized on it. They had a rough time getting out of some of those lifts though. The transitions could have been a lot smoother. It was a fun and very demanding routine. Overall, I think they did well.

Evan's Solo

I don't think Evan gets enough credit for his technical capabilities. His jumps, leaps and turns are really strong. There is definitely more to him than just his personality. I don't think he is stronger than Ade or Brandon, but he is no chump.

Jeanine's Solo

Not her best solo. Not sure what I think of that. It just didn't have much content.

Melissa and Evan dance Louis' Quick Step Routine

This was good for both of them. Both of their comfort zones played into this style well. I don't think this will be enough for Melissa, but I think that Evan is definitely getting the best material possible this week to help him stay for the finale.

Brandon's Solo

It was really smart of Brandon to save this till the end. He performed this piece for the audition round too. This illustrates every ounce of his ability and potential. He is so powerful and his classical technique is so smooth you could butter toast with it. The standing ovation was well deserved. Way to go Brandon! Get on the train, because you are riding it straight to the finale!

Jeanine and Ade dance Napoleon and Tabitha's Hip Hop Routine

Nappy Tabs loves them some props. I liked the use of the boxes, but do they have to communicate all of their concepts so literally? The eviction notice was a little much for me.

It was good. They weren't amazing, but they danced it well. I don't think this is not going to earn or lose them any votes. I just don't know if this is going to help them get in the finale.

Melissa's Solo

Yuck. Awkward. She gives ballet a bad name. She really needs to dance classical excerpts! All she is doing is cheapening the art form by pathetically trying to "modernize" a dance style that doesn't need to be modernized. Hey Melissa, learn to love the person that you are and stop trying to be something you're not.

Kayla and Brandon dance Stacey Tookey's Contemporary Piece

I agree with Lil C. This was a great match up. I think they both danced this beautifully. The choreography was great too. Some of the lifts did not appear as natural as others choreographically speaking. I felt like she threw some in there just to have a lift, but overall I was definitely impressed by the song choice and creativity.

I would pay a million dollars to have Kayla's extensions. I am not sure that I really liked her costume or hair... does she have one of the zig zag head bands in her hair?

Ade's Solo

I loved the song choice, choreography and execution. It was raw, but still placed. It was emotional, but still strong. He exhibited artistry and technique. Good stuff!

Melissa and Evan dance Tyce's Broadway Routine

Evan's musicality is so musical theater fabulous! This routine is just what Evan needed this week to get him into the finale. I think he looked very authentic.

I disagree with Nigel. I don't think Melissa adapts that well. I wish Melissa would let all of the prim and proper-ness go and allow her classical technique to be evident through her correct execution of movement. She shouldn't scream "trina" in every dance she does. It is getting old.

Kayla's Solo

She looked like she was on auto pilot. I was left wanting so much more musicality and dynamics. She kills me because in choreographed routines she shows so well. I am glad that she went for more non-traditional body shapes and movements this time, but the full package is not coming together in her solos.

Jeanine and Ade dance Louis van Amstel's Samba

I think the use of Lady Gaga will really help this dance be memorable because otherwise, there was nothing to write home about. I really like how Jeanine's face reflects her movement. She doesn't over do or force facial expressions, they are always natural.

Side Note: Jeanine's costume reminds me of Mayzie's tail in Seussical!

Top 3 Guys Perform Sonya's Jazz Routine

Willy Wonka inspired... interesting. I really liked the use of the cut gloves in bright yellow to bring attention to the hands. I really enjoyed the still poses that were interspersed throughout the choreography. The pictures were really captivating.

Ade's power and strength definitely stands out to me compared to the other two... yes, even over Brandon. I am not sure if this is because he is physically larger than the other two or if he just dances "larger." I agree that Evan kept up and really rose to the occasion. The routine was awesome. They all performed well.

Wednesday, July 29th's Performance Episode

Top 6 perform... Melissa is going to need a really good night to stay alive this week. After last week, who knows what is going to happen with the guys. I think the performances are really going to make a difference this week.

Hopefully we will have a Mia Michaels routine tonight!

Thursday, July 23, 2009

Well... I guess I was wrong

After going 2 for 2 last week I totally struck out this week! I am happy with who is left though. Next week is going to be really tough! I am not ready to let any of the ladies go.

Another great week of dance - well, another pretty good week of dance. There were definitely some lows this week, but the couple amazing pieces made up for it.

(It looks like Charm City did not make that grocery store cake)

Saying goodbye to Jason

Phew (wiping brow)... that was a close one! Jason was good, but he needs to grow some more. I was really scared we were going to lose Brandon!

Still upset about Katie's fake out

Great, let's teach our children to fake it... that is a great idea! Really?

Nigel wanted Jeanette to win...

ouch... burn... that is messed up Nigel. You have 6 really pissed off dancers to deal with now!

Saying goodbye to Jeanette

I am ok with this. Jeanette is not as talented as the other girls. She is sweet though and has done really well. I hate to say it, but that solo did not help her!

Kayla walked away from that like she was just in a car accident and sneaked out with her life!

Katie Holmes Performs Get Happy

She was so lip syncing... how cheesy and disappointing. It is good that they got all of those real dancers to dance around her so that we wouldn't notice that she can't really move. Great fake out. I could hardly tell.

I liked the choreography, but I have a problem with someone advocating for the arts and then pulling a SNL Ashleigh Simpson routine. Was it too hard for her to actually show up for the taping of the show and perform live on stage? Oh wait... but then she would have to be talented. That would be a problem... (tapping finger thoughtfully on chin) hmmmm...

Ramalama Bang Bang with WADE Dancing!

I LOVE THIS DANCE AND CANNOT BELIEVE THAT WADE JUST PERFORMED!!!!
Watching Wade perform is amazing... it is like he is possessed by the music. He is so phenomenal!

Again, it was great to see the original dancers perform this incredible number. I have always thought that Martha totally killed this choreography.

Brandon's Solo

I think Brandon performed this better last night...

I really hope he is not suffering from the "obvious favorite" curse where people do not vote for him because they think he is safe.

Jeanette's Solo

I can't watch this again... I really can't... I am not just being dramatic.

Jason's Solo

He is so going home... at least I hope he is instead of Brandon - eek!

Kayla & Evan dance the Viennese Waltz

I still don't get the pretty dress, but I do think that she performed that with a greater level of anxiousness than she did last night. Definitely a better performance... is it too late though?

Mia's Bench Routine with Travis and Heidi

It still gives me chills! I can't believe how much more mature Travis dances now. You can really see the growth he has made in strength and artistic articulation. I feel bad because Heidi is just the "girl in the dance." She really does not command any attention throughout the number... but I am thinking that Mia knew exactly what she was doing when she choreographed it that way...

hahaha (think Count Dracula)!

Who is in the bottom guy wise?

Ade is safe - again, I think Tyce's piece made all the difference!

Jason is in the bottom - I am not super surprised, but I did think that he had a decent night last night.

Evan is safe - I didn't see that coming! I guess his fans really LOVE him and were willing to get bruises on their dialing fingers to keep him on the show for another week!

Brandon is in the BOTTOM?!?!?! I am speechless!

Wade's Hummingbird Piece

I can't believe that they got the original dancers to come back and perform again. I hope they both have kept studying otherwise jumping back into that choreography would be a physical shock!

They looked good. The piece is definitely a reflection of Wade's left-field choreography! What kind of drugs does he do to come up with this stuff?

Bottom Two Girls

Melissa is safe - I am shocked. I guess that Tyce contemporary piece got viewers to vote for her. I am really surprised.

Kayla is in the bottom - I am surprised. I thought she had a great night last night with her two duets. I guess they were not as memorable as I thought.

Jeanette is in the bottom - I guess her fan base did not come through

Jeanine is safe - thank goodness... I guess the waltz didn't have an effect in the end.

Looking Back Through Five Awesome Years

Wow... it is crazy to see the faces all so many dancers from past seasons. I totally forgot about a couple of them. It was also great to see the quick clips from so many of the amazing dances that were produced over the five years. I know that I have been inspired so much by this show. I am sure that it has pushed and challenged other choreographers and dancers in ways that never existed before.

I am happy to celebrate how this show as able to bring present-day dance, real artistic dance to the forefront of pop culture.

Opening Group Number - One from A Chorus Line

I am going to try to look past the fact that the end poses were not the same... come on top 8!

Great choreography from Mia Michaels! I loved how much of the original Broadway choreography by Michael Bennett and Bob Avian could be seen through the contemporary interpretation. She did an amazing job paying tribute to the original while innovating and augmenting the movement. I really appreciated the use of the "cracked" mirrors and clown-like make-up elements to help communicate the message that this was not going to be your mama's Chorus Line.

Awesome!

Thursday, July 23 Results Show - 100th Episode!

I am excited to see who makes the cut tonight. I am also excited to see Katie Holmes show us what she's got.

Fan Base vs. Performances

So the question comes down to...

Will viewers vote for the top performers of the night or will they stay loyal to their season-long favorites? I guess we will have to wait and see!

So, which guy will get votes...

Brandon - so safe the other guys are wishing they were him. Each week he proves why he is a favorite!

Jason - After two strong duets with Kayla, I think Jason will be safe this week too.

Ade - I am scared for Ade. Although his performance of Tyce's contemporary was phenomenal, I think viewers are going to remember the dance more than the dancers. I don't know if his solo will be enough to keep him out of the bottom 2.

Evan - As much as I think Evan's fan base will still be voting for him like mad tonight, I think he is going to fall short. Neither of his performances were enough to gain any swing votes.

I think Evan will be going home this week.

So, which girl will get votes...

Kayla - I think her two strong duets tonight will keep her in the top.

Jeanine - This one is not as clear. I think Jeanine is a favorite among trained dancers so her following, solo and duet to Battlefield should keep her safe... but that waltz... I am not sure if that is going to negatively effect her in the end or not.

Jeanette - Although Jeanette is a favorite, she had a rough night between two disappointing duets and a confusing solo. If her fans get behind her she will be fine, but I think she is going to be in the bottom two.

Melissa - Although Melissa had an amazing moment with Ade performing Tyce's contemporary routine, I don't think it will be enough to keep this trina on her toes. I think her fan base has diminished.

I think Melissa will be going home this week.

Jason and Kayla dance Shane Sparks' Hip Hop routine

Wow, you can feel the influence of Thriller throughout this routine. I think the character really helped Kayla and Jason perform this creative and intricate choreography. They both seem to need strong direction from their choreographers to perform to the best of their ability. Their solos never have the same level of execution as their carefully choreographed routines do.

Good work. Kudos to Shane Sparks. Nice end of the show.

Brandon's Solo

For not being a very tall guy, Brandon dances like he is 10 feet tall. He has this incredible ability to dance beyond the natural space of his body. Power and strength... it sums it up.

Ade and Melissa dance Tyce's Contemporary Piece

I LOVE this song my Maxwell. It screams pain and longing... and love all at the same time.

This was really powerful. I think Tyce did an amazing job matching the music and the concept. It was emotionally thick and deep with vulnerability. I loved the contrast between Ade's strength and Melissa's softness. Really cool lift when Melissa jumped on Ade's back and then extended her body. The vertical lift that Mary talked about was amazing too!

I don't think that I can break this piece down to different elements. It would make the comprehensive artistic efforts of both the dancers and the choreographer trivial.

Standing ovation. I commend Tyce for bringing these emotions forward with such grace, strength and integrity.

Jeanine's Solo

Loved this! I know that Kayla gets all the attention about her long lines, but Jeanine's lines should not be overlooked. I loved the combination of technical elements and rhythmic punches. She is just so good.

Also, props for using Citizen Cope!

Evan's Solo

He can drop his hat and people will still love him. It is great that his love for dance and this style brings such energy to the stage each and every time he performs.

Brandon and Jeanine dance Lauriann Gibson's routine

Creatively speaking, I loved this piece. It had the weight and grit of a hip hop, the technical elements of a jazz dance and a softness of a lyrical - at points. I thought they performed with their whole heart, soul and body. They really communicated the essence of a warrior. Loved it!

However... there were several moments that were not clean. I am going to look past this and appreciate the passion and technical excellence that was exhibited in every movement, arm, kick and body line that they articulated.

I can hardly remember the horrible waltz from earlier in the night. They were lucky this one was second!
Is she trying to lose? I am mean really... what is she thinking?

Melissa's Solo

Ok. If Melissa is going to be the trina of the season then she needs to embrace the purity of the ballet art form and stop trying to be something that she is not. These contemporary-ily styled pointe routines to alternative music choices is not earning her votes. The ballet purists are pissed and the contemporary dancers think she is an imposter. Go back to your roots Melissa and dance an exerpt from Swan Lake or something!

Mia's Softer Side

Wow... is that Mia Michaels? Where did her sweet "we celebrate you" comment come from? Nice message to send to all of the aspiring dancers out there.

Evan and Janette dance Tony and Melanie's Rumba

Nice use of Kris Allen's cover of Heartless. My girl Hannah must have loved this!

Is this the night of awkward tempos? I can't say that this dance helped them much. Eh. There was something fumbly about it. Jeanette is a sexy demon... her hips roll in ways that shouldn't be legal. Poor Evan. He is not getting much help from the choreographers tonight.

Ade's Solo

I found Ade's solo to be really engaging. The non-traditional music choice totally drew me into his rhythmic and idiosyncratic movements. This was a good choice for him. I think he displayed strength in his precise movements and dynamic jumps, originality in his creative choices for music and choreography and mature judgment to go against the grain to create a solo that will really stand out to viewers. Way to go Ade!

Jason and Kayla dance Tyce's Broadway Jazz routine

I loved the city scape lighting. It totally set the stage for the piece.

Now that is what I have been waiting for. They had me with the first wrist break. Loved it. Their movement was as juicy as a fresh picked orange! I thought the two of them worked well with each other... created characters and a story line out of mid air. They both just redeemed themselves after some lack luster solos.

Jeanette's Solo

Was that a lyrical ballroom routine? Weird. I have seen better split leaps on 8 year olds. Her toes weren't pointed, her knees weren't extended and her thighs weren't pulled up. Yucky. She fell back on her weight as she went into the ponche which caused her to bobble a bit. Then she had to visit the 90s and pull out a roll over the toes. I am wiping tears... I can't handle the disappointment in tonight's show.

Ade and Melissa dance Tony and Melanie's Cha Cha

Before I get to the dance, I feel like the show is getting a bit heavy on the ballroom.

I feel sorry for Ade... that shirt makes him look like he stepped out of a 80s hair band. His hips helped me forget about it though! I wasn't buying Melissa's attempt to be sexy. She tried real hard though. Overall, it was a good performance... again, nothing outstanding.

I want to be blown away by these performances and things are coming out lack luster :-(

Jason's Solo

Hopping on a triple turn... really Jason? Really? Jason's cute face is going to have to work overtime this week after that solo. To his credit though, the height he achieves on his jumps and leaps is dreamy.

Brandon and Jeanine dance Hunter Johnson's Waltz

I am disappointed that these two awesome contemporary dancers got ballroom... I will wipe my tears and try to appreciate it. I said try...

I loved the toe drag into the lift... the transition was so buttery smooth! Otherwise, I was not super excited by it. However, is it the dancers or the choreography... Hey, if Mary thinks that they danced "respectfully" I think we should end with that. I think they might be in trouble though.

Ellen vs. Paula

Is there something ironic about the fact that Ellen DeGeneres's (intentionally crazy) comments on SYTYCD are easier to follow than Paula Abdul's on American Idol?

Kayla's Solo

I love this song... not crazy about Kayla's performance though. I think she is going to need to do a whole more than that to stand out. Not to mention, why the heck is she wearing a pretty dress... I am missing any aspect of her performance that reflected the freakishness of the music. I mean, you could have danced that choreography to Mariah Carey and it would have gone better.

Evan and Janette Dance Sonya's Jazz Routine

There were no jazz hands in this piece! Sonya's music choices are so out of the box and unexpected. I like how the mouth grab grew into a story line without it being literal. I liked the weirdness of the choreography, it brought charm to the isolated body shapes.

This definitely shows growth in both of them as dancers. However, I have to agree with Mary that they lacked a certain amount of grittiness that would have brought a nice edge to their performance. I wish the performance climaxed a bit more. I found it a bit monotonous in energy and character as the piece developed... otherwise it was good. Not sure if I agree with Mia about Janette being her favorite... jury is out on that one!

Top 8 Dance Travis Wall's "Fusion" Piece

I love the use of glow in the dark, light and reflection costume elements to communicate the futuristic vibe that Travis was going for. The costuming combined with the "fusion" of dance styles really brought a level of artistic integrity to what is otherwise a cheesy pop song. I am sure that dances to this song could be seen on several recital stages this year, but I doubt any of them looked like that. Without the futuristic concept, I am afraid that the slightly slower tempo of this song would have made this dance crash and burn.

If the dancers were not as talented, there is no way that they could have pulled this off. They did a great job exhibiting and communicating a level of energy that match the song's teeny bopper feel and didn't get lost in the slower tempo (for an upbeat number). Difficult thing to do.

Tonight's Judges

Well, since Mia is on the judges panel I am guessing that we won't be seeing any of her choreographic genius on tonight's episode :-(

I can't wait to hear Ellen DeGeneres' comments! She is so funny! I love her "where the streets have no name" reference during her introductory babble! What a trip!

Wednesday, July 22nd's Performance Episode

We are down to the top 8 dancers! I am crossing my fingers for a Mia Michaels routine!

Til Next Week

Another great week of SYTYCD. I am already looking forward to next Wednesday. The choreography inspires me, the creativity consumes me, the artistry moves me and the performances engage me. I just can't get enough!

Saying goodbye to Kupono

I hate to say it, but I saw it coming. I actually think that Kupono lasted longer than I expected. I think he lucked out and got some really great choreography over the past couple of weeks that helped him elongate his stay. Regardless, his performance in Mia's contemporary last week was awesome. I guess that shows that he has a lot of potential.

Saying goodbye to Randi

Gosh, I hate it when I am right! I am sad to see her go because she is super talented. She just had a really rough night. I am going to miss her unitards...
That was so much fun... I loved the confetti!

Black Eyed Peas

Such an awesome song. It totally makes me want to get up a dance around the room like a total idiot... I can't hold back. I am taking a dance break... back when this song is done!

Ade's Solo

Love the control on his turns! I could eat that with a spoon it was so milky and smooth.

Melissa's Solo

Same awkward solo as last night. eh~
I didn't mean it that way...

Kupono's Solo

Was that the same solo that he performed last night? Again... what is Kupono's main "style"? I have no clue what I would call that... I still like his originality though. I also think that he could be a really good male model. He has good bone structure.

Randi's Solo

Stronger than her solo last night. I think she is in the bottom for the first time for two reasons:

1. Paso Doble was not good
2. New partner... I think that Evan might have kept her safe in past weeks.

Debbie's "casualty of a style" reference is so true!

The bottom four

I think these 4 have ended up in the bottom this week due to circumstance. I don't think that these dancers did anything wrong as much as I think that the top 6 have done a lot of things right.
Ade is in the bottom... I am not surprised. I really like Ade, but after some process of elimination he ends up falling to the bottom. I think it would be really hard to beat the fan bases of Brandon and Evan. Jason had a great night... that leaves Ade and Kupono.
Brandon is safe... I am sure this does not surprise anyone. He is definitely the male favorite to win it all.
Kupono is in the bottom two... as predicted. He just did not do enough last night to keep his head above water.
Evan is safe... kinda surprising after the slightly awkward waltz with Kayla and struggle during the group African dance. I guess his adorable personality and Broadway bound solo did the trick.

Who is in the bottom guy wise?

Jason is safe... his standout duet with Jeanine and better than average solo got him a ton of votes.
Melissa... I am kinda surprised that Melissa is in the bottom. I would have thought that her "ballerina" identity would have made her stand out from the rest. I still think that she will stay another week over Randi. Randi's rough night is going to be hard to overcome.
Kayla is safe... another one who I think has a lot of fans. Guys think she is hot and "real" dancers think her technique and lines are to die for.
Jeanine is safe... I think she has a strong fan base and had a great night last night. She is solid. I think a ton of "real" dancers love her. If you know technique, you can recognize that Jeanine has it!
Randi... as predicted is in the bottom two. She had a rough night last night.

Who is in the bottom girl wise?

Jeanette is safe... as predicted her fan base and strong solo kept her alive!
So much filler... so little time. I wish they were able to incorporate more dance performances into the results show, especially now that the dancers will not be "dancing for their lives."

Emmy Noms

Awesome to see four routines nominated for an Emmy! This show has totally put 21st century dance on the map in pop culture.

Thursday, July 16 Results Show

Great opening routine by Wade and his wife Amanda. I loved the costuming and concept. They are so crazy creative. I love the contrast in movement styles... they make it totally work.

Wednesday, July 15, 2009

So, which guy will get votes...

Brandon - safe, safe and safe... his fan base is huge and he performed well.

Jason - I think he is safe too, thanks to his powerful contemporary duet and original solo.

Ade - I would be surprised if Ade was not safe. He performed well, but I think Evan's large fan base may mess with Ade's standing.

Evan - Evan did not have a great duet or group performance, but his solo should be memorable. I also think people find him lovable. I think his fan base will pull him through this week.

Kupono - The dark horse... like Ade, I think Evan's popularity and his sad Paso Doble might mess with his chances. I think he will definitely be in the bottom two.

My guess is that Kupono goes home this week. I just don't think his performances or fan base are large enough to keep him on the show for another week.

So, which girl will get votes...

Jeanine - Strong solo and great contemporary... she should be safe

Kayla - I think Kayla better hope for a strong fan base. I don't think her solo or her Viennese waltz was enough to keep her completely out of jeopardy.

Jeanette - I think her solo, contemporary routine and fan base will keep her safe.

Melissa - Not sure about Melissa. This week we will see if she has a true fan base or if Ade was pulling her along each week. Her performances were good, but I don't think they were memorable.

Randi - I am also not sure about Randi. Her lack luster solo and Paso Doble will probably place her in the bottom.

My guess is that Randi goes home this week.

Top 5 Guys dance Jeffrey Page's African routine

I love that Jeffrey said "this is not gonna be your Hollywood African!" It is so hard for trained dancers to let go of their training to get to the roots of just pure movement.

Not as clean as I would have liked, but it was good. Evan really struggled, but he tried really hard. He seamed to be about a half second late throughout. Kupono had some nice moments. Ade and Brandon killed it. Jason definitely held his own. Cool choreography. Really great to see African dance choreographed with this level of integrity and authenticity on a pop culture TV show!

Jeanette's Solo

I think she looked good. It is so hard to do a ballroom solo and not look awkward, but I think Jeanette was able to perform this solo with integrity. She probably broke a ton of ballroom rules, but I would never know that and I would guess that most viewers wouldn't either! She stayed true to herself and looked strong.

Melissa and Brandon dance Tyce's Broadway routine - HAIR

Classical technique duo as hippies... I like the costuming. Nice bridge between the style of the era and danceable clothes. The choreography was not a true musical theater piece. It was more of a jazz dance set to Aquarius in my opinion. This was a smart choice by Tyce because it played to their strengths. It still retained the essence of the 70s and the show. It was good... not amazing, but good.

Jason's Solo

Three great solos in a row. Jason really surprised me with this one. Great and unexpected music choice. He really demonstrated a mature sense of composition and movement. This might have been one of the first times that I genuinely enjoyed him as an artist.

Jeanine's Solo

Another great solo! She did an awesome job showing off her lines and technique without it feeling tricky. She looked strong, trained and artistic. Good stuff!

Ade's Solo

Wow. That was definitely the best solo of the night so far. Really awesome. I loved him last week in disco and I loved him this week in his solo. I think Ade is on Brandon's heels!

Randi and Kupono dance Tony and Melanie's Paso Doble

First, Randi looks like Kelly Clarkson with that wig!

Although they both danced this well considering that they are out of their comfort zone, I think Kupono communicated the intensity of the style better than Randi. I can see how Nigel would want his movement to be more into the floor though. They worked better than I expected as a couple. It seamed a little flumbly and lacked authenticity at times. Their movement definitely did not match the music.

Kayla's Solo

So, I am having a hard time with this one. I HATE it when people dance lyrical with a constant smile. Not all lyrical routines are downers, but the constant smile looks fake and forced in my opinion. Her choreography on her solo did not bring out the artistry that I saw in previous duets on the show. Where is the grittiness from Mia's contemporary routine... where is that Kayla? She needs to be able to show that same level of artistry and depth in every routine that she dances.

Evan's Solo

He looked great. He so belongs on Broadway. His character comes through so clearly as he dances. He also gets great height on his jumps and is a very clean dancer in his style.

Melissa's Solo

I did not think that her choreography reflected this song by Lamb. She will stand out due to her ballet pointe work. She is definitely a strong ballerina.

Jeanine and Jason dance Travis' Contemporary Routine

I love Travis Wall's choreography. Really unique lifts. His mom Denise nurtures amazing artistry in her dancers.

I don't know if the two of them really did justice to the full intention of Travis' choreography though. Although they looked AMAZING, I think they could have danced it with more musicality. Some moments felt a bit contrived to me... brief moments. Overall though it was really good.

Love Jason Mraz... great song choice.

Kupono's Solo

I really love Kupono's originality, but I was not impressed by his solo. Cool movement, but not much technique. What is Kupono's main "style" anyway? I can't remember...

Randi's Solo

Nice to see her balance turns, leaps and movement in her choreography. I wouldn't say that this was a very artistic routine, but she looked good. I would have preferred that she did a clean quad than fall out of the last rotation of her quint.

Jeanette and Ade dance Nappy Tabs Hip Hop

Well, Jeanette tried really hard and did well considering how far out of her comfort zone Hip Hop is. Cool roll thing in the middle of the routine. Ade definitely carried the routine. Ade looked good, but not as good as I expected. They definitely had moments that were not clean. They were details, but they stood out to me. Choreography was ok, not as cool as the group number from last week though.

Brandon's Solo

I love this version of "In Your Eyes!" I am glad that Brandon did not fill this solo with straight tricks, but I felt like his choreography got a bit redundant. He still looked strong though. He just exudes strength, technique and power. I wish his solo reflected that along with his artistry a little more. It was still good though.
Debbie crack's me up - Evan "you handled your big woman!"
Its nice to have Mary comment critically for this dance style. I am not familiar enough with specific ballroom technique to knowledgeably offer a full critique. I feel like Mary's comments really help me learn more about what I should be watching for during ballroom routines.

Kayla & Evan dance the Viennese Waltz

Slightly awkward with the height difference. I am also not a big Seal fan so this was not my favorite music choice. I am a fan of Kayla's so it is hard for me to think that she did not look good. I think they did an OK job. They worked well together considering the height difference and being their first time as a couple. I agree with Nigel that Kayla's lines looked great.
Judges all liked it too. Debbie Allen thinks this is the best "top 5 girls" that they have ever had on the show. I would probably agree. I can't remember another time when all of the girls left at this point impressed me. Usually there is one or two that lack technique and cannot execute at the same level. This year is definitely different.
Fun routine. Cool choreography. Kayla looked really strong throughout the number. Jeanine did not look as good as I expected. Jeanette was not as precise with her movements, but her energy definitely helped her. Melissa and Randi were both fine. They are all really good, but I think Kayla stood out during this number.
All five girls in a Bollywood routine... hmmm... should be interesting. I don't think any of the girls are going to struggle. They are all pretty talented and have a good amount of technique to fall back on. This should be a great way to see which girl stands out over the rest!
I can't wait to see who everyone gets paired up this week. The new couples should be really interesting!

Wednesday, July 15th's Performance Episode

I am so excited to start this blog. Can't wait to share all of my crazy thoughts about SYTYCD as it is televised!
